What a Fractional CTO Actually Does — and When to Get One

The fractional CTO model has grown significantly in South Africa over the last few years, but there is still a lot of confusion about what it is, what it is not, and when it actually makes sense.

The simplest version: a fractional CTO provides senior technology leadership at a fraction of the cost and commitment of a full-time hire. You get the experience, the strategic thinking, the vendor relationships, and the ability to ask hard questions — on a schedule that fits your business.

When it makes sense

The fractional model works well when your business is at a stage where you need senior technology input but cannot justify — or do not yet need — a full-time technology executive. This is more common than it sounds. Many businesses between R20m and R200m turnover are making significant technology decisions without anyone at leadership level who understands the technical implications.

It also works well for specific projects — a cloud migration, a security review, a vendor selection, a technology strategy refresh. You need the expertise for a defined period, not permanently.

When it does not

A fractional CTO is not a substitute for technical leadership in a business where technology is the core product. If you are building software, you need a full-time technical co-founder or CTO. A fractional arrangement does not work when the technology decisions are daily and the stakes are existential.

It also does not work if the engagement is purely advisory without any accountability. The fractional CTO needs to be in the room when decisions are made — not just consulted after the fact.
